Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” reportedly has their eyes on several actors who could possibly become their leading man in the franchise.

Variety reports Ewan McGregor, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jared Leto, Ethan Hawke, Matthew McConaughey and Oscar Isaac are rumored to be in the running to take on the role.

The actors came into play after Joaquin Phoenix allegedly decided to pass on the role. Some of the actors have been previously linked to the film during the rumored Phoenix negotiations, including Leto:

“Sources tell Variety the recent Oscar-winner [Leto] is aggressively pursuing the mystical part since Phoenix's departure and despite being notoriously picky about his movie roles, appears ready to get back in front of the camera. ‘Doctor Strange,’ somewhat of a rockstar in the Marvel universe, could be the perfect fit for him.”

However, Gyllenhaal is reportedly the most interested in the role as he’s been trying to land a superhero gig with Marvel since “Spiderman.”

“Sources say the actor is quite interested in playing a superhero after a string of dark, brooding films like ‘Prisoners’ and ‘Nightcrawlers,’ both of which earned the actor rave reviews,” according to Variety.

“Years ago, Gyllenhaal was close to replacing Tobey Maguire in ‘Spiderman 2’ before Maguire came back to the role. It looks like he's still very intrigued with the comicbook realm.”

Marvel will reportedly announce their casting decision soon as the film is set to hit theaters on July 8, 2016.
