Can Elena really get over Damon?

"The Vampire Diaries" kicked off its sixth season, with a grieving Elena still trying to get over the loss of Damon - who is probably the love of her life; but as Elena tries to pull herself together - a new love interest could right around the corner.

In a new interview with E! News, executive producer Julie Plec shared that the writers considered adding another element within Elena's world "which is apart of the everyday human."

"[In] the second episode, her methods are extremely controversial and kind of self-destructive," Plec teased. "So, as she tries to pull herself together, there actually is a character that floats around in her college universe who clearly has eyes for her. Whether she has eyes for him, you know, that's too soon to tell because, of course, she's lost the love of her life."

[SPOILER ALERT!] In the season six, episode two promo, Elena enlists Alaric to help her forget she ever loved Damon and he must try and find the moment when Elena fell in love with Damon.

But Elena is not the inly character getting a love interest. Plec revealed that Stefan, played by Paul Wesley, is in a new town and has a new flame - someone who doesn't know that he is a vampire.

"Stefan has a love interest and we'll find that out pretty darn quick," Plec admitted. "I'm not making any promises on how well that's going to go. Stefan's created this whole universe that he wants to live in and he's basically Mr. Denial."

Plec went on to reveal that season six will begin to feel reminiscent of season one.

"Vampire Diaries this season is so fun and fresh and so exciting to write," Plec said. "All the characters are going through all this crazy stuff that is really deeply rooted in their own emotional experience. Stefan is making all these choices about what kind of life he wants to live next and it doesn't necessarily involve anybody that he already knows."

"Caroline is really struggling with the fact that her friends are scattered and she can't even go home and sleep in her own bed. Tyler's human again and is terrified that he's going to do something to trigger his curse. Alaric is back teaching! And we're dealing with the fact that he had to come back and start his life over but he doesn't really feel comfortable in his own vampire skin."

"The Vampire Diaries" airs Thursday at 8 p.m. on The CW.
