David Fincher almost landed the coveted director’s chair on the “Star Wars: Episode VII” set.

During an interview with Total Film, Fincher revealed Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy courted him before the big Disney merger.

Fincher is unsure the direction of the new “Star Wars: Episode VII” film since he discussed it with Kennedy because the vision they spoke about was likely scrapped after Disney took over Lucasfilm.

"I talked to Kathy about it, but I think that it's a different thing from... I don't know what Disney-Lucasfilm will be like," Fincher told Total Film.

"It's tricky," he added. "My favorite is 'The Empire Strikes Back.' If I said, 'I want to do something more like that,' then I'm sure the people paying for it would be like, 'No! You can't do that! We want it like the other one with all the creatures!'”

Fincher also described his vision of the original “Star Wars” franchise to Total Film. Though many believed the story’s stars are Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Leia, the “Gone Girl” director believes C-3PO and R2-D2 are the real main characters.

"I always thought of Star Wars as the story of two slaves [C-3PO and R2-D2] who go from owner to owner, witnessing their masters' folly, the ultimate folly of man... I thought it was an interesting idea in the first two, but it's kind of gone by 'Return Of The Jedi,'" Fincher said.

“Star Wars: Episode VII”, directed by J.J. Abrams will be released to Dec. 18, 2015. The film will star original cast members Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford, along with cast newcomer Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Lupita N’yongo and more.
