It's over for Jordin Sparks and pop star Jason Derulo. Multiple sources confirmed to E! News that the couple of three years decided to call it quits but will remain close friends. A reasoning behind the breakup has not been revealed but reportedly it was a mutual decision, E! reports.

A different source told US Weekly that the decision to end their relationship was hard on both Derulo and Sparks.

"They are both upset. It just wasn't working out," the source said. "It was a lot of travel and hard to work with their schedules."

The "Talk Dirty to Me" singer first announced his romance with the "American Idol" alum in January 2012 even though rumors first surfaced in September 2011. Shortly after going public, Sparks said in an interview that the two were already talking about getting married one day.

"It's not a conversation that we're scared about," she said.

"You really see the people you love and you go, I don't want to lose you," Sparks added, referencing when Derulo fractured his neck in January of 2012.

Clearly, Derulo felt the same way and even penned the romantic ballad "Marry Me" for Sparks. At the time, it was rumored that the two had gotten engaged when the 25-year-old pop star proposed to Sparks in the video. Derulo denied the rumors but told ABC that he wrote the song so his lady love would know how serious he was about their romance.

"That's the reason why I wrote the song in the first place," he said at the time. "Because I wanted her to know that when the time is right then it will happen."

"It'll be the most amazing time," Derulo added. "When I do get down on one knee, it's going to be one of the most amazing experiences of my life, but when the time is right."

The last time the couple was spotted together was in August at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards where they wore coordinated all-white outfits.
