A man from central Texas died Saturday after been attacked by a hive of Africanized bees, according to WacoTrib.com. The woman who attempted to aid the man suffered injuries.

According to Deputy Matt Cawthon of the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office, the man who was attacked by the bees was Larry Goodwin of Moody, Texas.

According to Allen Miller—the owner of Bees Be Gone—Goodwin accidently hit a bee hive while driving his tractor. The hive was months old and covered by a chicken coop. Miller’s services were required to remove the hive, which he said was most likely filled with a little more than 40,000 bees.

Goodwin ran from his tractor and the hive to a nearby home and drenched himself in water from a garden hose. A woman attempted to help Goodwin but after running out of her house to his aid the bees also attacked her. Some firefighters from the Moody Volunteer Fire Department were stung as well after arriving onsite.

The woman was taken to a hospital but Goodwin was pronounced dead at the scene, said Cawthon.

“We need to let people know these bees are in the area and tell children in particular not to disturb or irritate the hives,” he added.

Miller recalls dealing with six Africanized bee hives in the county since spring started.

“You can’t believe how bad they are. They make me want to get out of this business,” Miller said. “They can get up under your clothes where no other insect can go. In a hive of ordinary European bees, about 10 percent will attack if the hive is threatened, but with African bees, all of them attack you.”
