Samsung shared the latest news on the sales of its flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone in Germany, where it surpassed one million units.

Samsung, the world's largest smartphone-making company, is pretty secretive about its smartphone sales numbers outside South Korea. But the company changed its tradition by announcing the sales of its Galaxy S5 smartphone in Germany. The Korean tech giant celebrated its one million milestone for the Galaxy S5 sales in Germany by offering a €500 (about $640) voucher to the millionth buyer.

Samsung shared the news of its achievement on Friday. Ironically, it was the same day as Apple launched its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in several markets around the world, including Germany. Samsung enjoyed some early success with the 2014 flagship smartphone by shipping more than 11 million units in its debut month. The Galaxy S5 sales were slightly better than its predecessor, but Samsung was largely hit by rivals such as Apple and LG.

LG's flagship smartphone, the G3, surpassed Galaxy S5 demand with 100,000 units sold in just 5 days of launch. Comparatively, Samsung sold about 25,000 to 30,000 units a day. The G3 smartphone was well-received for its high-end features such as the fastest processor and highest-resolution display in the market. To beat the competition, Samsung released a remodeled Galaxy S5 with 2K display and faster processor but limited the sales of the handset to its home country.

In a separate survey done by market research firm Counterpoint, Apple's iPhone 5S surpassed Samsung's flagship in sales in July. Now, the release of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus further threatens the Korean tech company.

Previous reports have suggested Samsung's aim to ship 35 million units worldwide by the end of this year. If it is able to manage selling one million in Germany, it doesn't seem an impossible task for the smartphone maker to achieve the bigger milestone. Samsung is also expected to start selling its own products, the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge, in October. The company is looking to keep a better balance of sales with its rivals with the two new phablets.
