Amazon purchased the top-level .buy domain name for $4.6 million in a recent auction.

The auction was held by ICANN, the organization that controls the world's top-level domains, according to The Next Web. ICANN is expected to sell a range of new domains before the end of the year, and Amazon is looking to get the best-looking ones while they're available.

The purchase gives the e-commerce giant exclusive access to all .Buy websites.

Amazon beat out several other companies to acquire the domain name, such as Google, Donuts and Famous Four Media, Tech Times reported.

Other domain names put up for auction include .Tech, which was bought by DotTech LLC for $6.7 million, and .VIP, which was bought by Irish domain resellers Minds + Machines for just more than $3 million.

While Google lost out on buying all three of these domains, the search giant still has the chance to secure other ones and is currently looking into more than 100 top-level domains, The Verge reported.

The acquisition of all three top-level domains gives their new owners the responsibility of registering and maintaining any future domain registrations. Acquiring .Buy also gives Amazon the opportunity to secure "hate sites" like amazonsucks.buy and add it to its collection, which includes screwamazon.com, amazonstinks.com and amazonsucks.com.
