What happens when you make a ridiculous joke with your friends that turns out becoming your ticket to fame?

Just ask Wulf Beleites, who is the editor-in-chief of German magazine "Poop & Pooches."

The Wall Street Journal reports:

Beleites was out drinking one night at a pub with a bunch of his fellow journalist friends when they started asking each other what the most ridiculous made-up magazine title would be. Beleites suggested the name "Poop & Pooches" - an ironic name, since Germans typically love dogs and the name pokes fun at the pet.

The fake magazine name started getting Beleites noticed once he took the ridiculous made-up magazine title and jokingly got it trademarked. The act got him called onto several TV talk shows, despite the fact that the magazine was non-existent at the time.

Today, "Poop & Pooches" is a real thing. Beleites ran into some trouble making money in the media business during his career, so he decided to actually produce a publication under his ridiculous "Poop & Pooches" trademarked name.

The joke turned out to be a money-making hit after the first issue - leading with stories such as "Pimp Up Your Pooch" and tacky dog cemeteries - sold out in a few days.

Beleites' philosophy on why the magazine turned out to be a hit is simple:

"There are two types of people in Germany. One type loves dogs. Another type doesn't. These are my readers."
