Dell is upping the ante on desktop displays by announcing the world's first UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor with 5120 x 2880 pixel resolution.

Dell, one of the largest PC makers around the world, has a new addition to its UltraSharp line of monitors that set a new standard across the industry. While the rate of adoption for 4K display panels has been slow, Dell is filling the space with higher resolution displays that pack 5120-by-2880 pixels in its all-new UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor. The end result on this new 5K monitor is four times more than that of a QHD display and seven times the resolution of Full HD, Dell said in an official press release.

The new 5K monitor was announced during the company's Modern Workforce livestream last week, and aims to find a suitable place in the workstation-class line of monitors than in the gaming gig. This is certainly not a feasible upgrade for the stock towers in the market, as it requires additional graphic cards to bring out the true potential. The UltraSharp 5K monitor packs whopping 14.7 million pixels crammed into a 27-inch screen with 218 pixel-per-inch, compared to 8.3 million pixels found in a 3840x2160 4K monitor.

According to AnandTech's sorting of displays in terms of their PPI capacity, Dell's latest monitor is slightly lower than Apple's 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro (221ppi) on a display size almost twice in diagonal length. The UltraSharp 5K monitor puts away the 13-year-old IBM T220 in the highest-resolution category.

According to a report by Maximum PC, Dell's new monitor will require two DisplayPort 1.2 ports in order to take advantage of the 5K resolution. Dell said that it offers six USB ports, one media card reader, two 16W Harman Kardon speakers and its proprietary PremierColor and anti-smudge, anti-reflective glass design. Maximum PC noted that the monitor will include a miniDisplayPort that will run the screen in 4K mode.

Dell is expected to begin shipping of the UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor in the fourth quarter of this year for $2,500.
