Samsung has adopted a unique design concept for its latest Galaxy Note Edge, with one-sided wraparound display for quick access to frequently used apps.

Samsung, the largest smartphone maker, has stepped in to the future of  smartphones with its uniquely designed Galaxy Note Edge. The new phablet is aptly named for its one-sided wraparound display that grants quick access to various smartphone features without interrupting the main-screen function. The Galaxy Note Edge was launched alongside the flagship Galaxy Note 4 during the company's Unpacked 2014 Episode 2 event at the IFA 2014 trade show in Berlin.

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge features a Quad HD display similar to the one in Galaxy Note 4 and adds an extra 160 pixels on the curved edge. The handset is basically a Note 4 with a curved edge on the right side, complete with stylus, Optical Image Stabilization for the camera, fingerprint scanner, heart rate monitor and all other specs and features in the company's Note flagship. The Note Edge will, however, come in two variants, 32GB and 64GB storage options, along with different processors based on the market. Support for Gear VR headset is exclusive to Galaxy Note 4, leaving the Edge out of the virtual reality picture.

"The Galaxy Note Edge's unique curved Edge screen provides quick access to frequently used apps, alerts and device functionality - even when the cover is closed - all with the swipe of a thumb," the company said in a press release. "Users can also receive notifications directly on the Edge Screen while watching videos without disturbing their viewing."

The Galaxy Note Edge features a 180-rotatable display, which means left-handed users have been taken into consideration. The curved display on the side features its own unique functions like launching camera, video, S Note, a ticker board, quick tools, night clock, wallpaper changer, news ticker, S health data, weather reports, stopwatch, timer, ruler and lot more, all with a swipe of a thumb, Mashable reports after a hands-on experience with the device.

The publication says the apps in the side column, which can be customized based on users needs, are responsive and do not lag. Launching the app fades away the icons but a single swipe will display all controls on the edge strip. The camera interface is different from other smartphones. All controls like settings, capture among others are moved to the edge strip, with the main screen equipped with images.

Samsung did not reveal the pricing of its Galaxy Note Edge. The handset will hit the stores in fall in two color variants, charcoal black and frost white.
