While swimming at a Florida beach, trying to enjoy the last days of summer, a 13-year-old girl was attacked by a shark.

The brave victim, Alexandra Masterson, was bodysurfing in the water with her dad when she felt something hit her leg. She never suspected that it was a shark.

At first, she thought it was a turtle bite, but then realized it was a shark bite after examining the wound more closely, according to Inquisitr.

Her dad, a trained paramedic, carried her to the beach where she was quickly cared for.

No witnesses saw the shark that bit Masterson, but professionals said it was a spinner shark, judging by the size of the wound, Inquisitr reported.

The spinner shark species only grows to be about 10-feet long.

"New Smyrna Beach is the most common place to encounter sharks not only in the United States, but in the world," George Burgess, director of the Florida Museum of Natural History's International Shark Attack File, told Headline Surfer.

Florida has the highest shark activity in the world, according to data from the International Shark Attack File. Florida accounted for 50 percent of America's shark attacks in 2013.
