The recent harassment of Anita Sarkeesian, creator of a web series “Feminist Frequency,” has caused game developers to release an open letter to the community about how they interact with those who opinions’ differ from their own.

Sarkeesian’s “Feminist Frequency” explores the representation of women in video games. She uses examples in popular titles to fuel her argument about perpetuating female stereotypes and how they affect the way society views women. Her videos are received with both praise and an overwhelming amount of hate.

The “Feminist Frequency” creator recently had to contact authorities and leave her home after receiving violent threats against herself and her loved ones. The threats were made after the release of her latest video, “Women as Background Decoration: Part 2 - Tropes vs. Women in Video Games.”

Andreas Zecher of Spaces of Play took to Medium.com to call an end to the harassment of those who openly criticize games. Developers from Riot Games, Ubisoft, Nintendo, Naughty Dog and more signed the potential, totaling about 1200 signatures, according Zecher. Read the open letter to the gaming community below:

We believe that everyone, no matter what gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion or disability has the right to play games, criticize games and make games without getting harassed or threatened. It is the diversity of our community that allows games to flourish.

If you see threats of violence or harm in comments on Steam, YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, Facebook or reddit, please take a minute to report them on the respective sites.

If you see hateful, harassing speech, take a public stand against it and make the gaming community a more enjoyable space to be in.

Thank you

Andreas Zecher (Spaces of Play)
