A Georgia grandfather suffered a bullet wound to the head while defending his grandson during an attempted carjacking earlier this week, CBS46 reported.

Luther Tookes, of Lithonia, had picked up his 9-year-old grandson from school on Tuesday and the two were sitting in his driveway when two men drove up behind his car. Tookes, 71, turned and saw one of the men had a gun.

"I told my grandson to get down," Tookes told the station. "I had my gun in my glove compartment but I couldn't get it here, cause he walked on me too fast."

When Tookes backed his car into the suspects' vehicle, they open fired. Tookes retrieved his gun and began shooting back, "and then they started running and that was it," he said.

One of the bullets grazed Tookes in the head and he was treated at a local hospital.

"I got a little headache from the four staples they put in my head," the Vietnam vet told WSBTV. "They said it was pretty close."

After the attempted carjacking the two men fled the scene and stole another vehicle while the dirver was sitting inside. The owner, who was yanked out of the AT&T van, was hospitalized for a leg injury.

DeKalb County police eventually caught the suspects after a 20-mile chase. One of the men was arrested after he jumped out of the moving van. The other suspect was arrested when police forced the van to stop by boxing it in, CBS 4 reported.

Both suspects, identified as Kelvin Brown and Justin Williams, were charged with armed robbery and three counts of aggravated assault. Brown, the one who stayed in the van, was also charged with aggravated assault on a police officer.

Tookes said he would do the same thing again if it meant saving his grandson's life.

"I didn't know if they were going to let me and my grandson live." he told CBS46. "I didn't want to take no chances."
