Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon's six-year marriage is hanging on for dear life - but can it really be saved?

After living apart for several months, the couple finally had a heart-to-heart meeting at their New York apartment to discuss the terms of their relationship and their children, three-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe.

A source told E! Online that "The America's Got Talent" host gave his estranged wife permission to take their children out of town. The Grammy-winning singer is reportedly "done taking a passive role" when it comes to the marriage.

"She asked Nick to come over to the apartment [Tuesday] to talk - that's why he was there," a source close to the couple said. "She told him she needed to get out of town, and she was taking the kids with her. Nick was fine with it. The reports about him being concerned about the welfare of the kids aren't true. If he was worried, the kids wouldn't be with her, period. He thinks she's a good mom."

The couple, who surprised friends and family by getting married in a secret ceremony in 2008, are reportedly ready to move on with their lives. A source added that the couple agreed to let Carey make the officially announcement about their divorce.

''She told him there would be one announcement about the divorce, and it was going to come from her team," the source continued. "'Nick said he was fine with this, too. He knows he really upset her by speaking out of turn last week and has apologized for it."

Last week Cannon confirmed that there was "trouble in paradise." The singer was devastated that Cannon opened up to the media about their troubled material problems because ''they had agreed to work on a statement together.''

Carey reportedly thought her husband's response was "extremely childish, impulsive and opportunistic. For her, it was the last straw. She's done with him now." A representative for the singer said she is "focusing on her children and her upcoming tour."
