Spotify released an update Tuesday that allows Microsoft's Windows Phone users to stream music for free.

The app can be used to listen to artists, albums and playlists on shuffle, as well as look at playlists in the "Browse" section that were created to fit different moods, according to PC Magazine. However, a membership is still needed to listen to certain songs on demand.

"We're excited to see Spotify made available for free on Windows Phone," said Steve Guggenheimer, corporate vice president of Microsoft. "This puts a much-loved listening experience in the hands of Windows Phone fans across the world, and beautifully showcases both our platform and the Spotify service."

Before the update, Windows Phone users needed a premium subscription in order to stream music through Spotify, CNET reported. The subscription option includes ad-free mobile and offline listening for $9.99 a month.

The update follows the company's announcement that the app, which is available in 57 markets around the world, has obtained a total paid subscriber base of 10 million global users.

Other improvements were made to Spotify as part of Tuesday's update, according to PC Magazine. Search results have a better presentation, and it is easier for users to look for and discover artists and songs. Those with devices running on Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 can download the Spotify update now from the Windows Phone Store.

The Windows Phone update is the latest change made to Spotify, following one week after the introduction of the company's new Serendipity project, an animated world map designed to show Spotify users around the world listening to the same songs at the same time.
