MTV Video Music Award viewers were outraged Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner appeared to be on their smartphones during a tribute to Ferguson, Mo.

Rapper Common asked the audience and viewers alike to pay their respects to Michael Brown and the people of Ferguson in a moment of silence. Cameras panned the crowd and caught the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" stars on their phones, seemingly not paying attention to the issue.

Many viewers took to their Twitter accounts to express their anger towards the reality stars.

“Kylie Jenner on her phone during the Ferguson speech was a bit rude,” one user wrote.

“Kim Kardashian was apparently texting during the Ferguson tribute at the VMA's, but in her defense she doesn't even like that band,” another user added, mocking the reality star.

The protests in Ferguson are ongoing. Children returned to school on Monday after the outrage sparked by Brown’s death caused a delay. The Associated Press reports Brown was a recent graduate of Normandy High School, which resumed classes last week.
