The United States State Department and Venezuelan police say two U.S. Embassy officials were shot early Tuesday during a fight in a Caracas strip club, according to the Associated Press.

Details of the altercation were not confirmed as reports varied on whether the shooting happened inside or outside the club.

According to law enforcement, the two officials suffered gunshot wounds inside the club, named Antonella 2012, which is located in a shopping center basement. The shopping center is in an upper middle class neighborhood in Chacao.

Police Spokesmen Douglas Rico spoke with Venezuelan TV channel Globovision. “Apparently it was a fight originating in a nightspot where these people were attacked and shots were fired at them and they suffered gunshot wounds," he explained at the health clinic where the officials were treated.

Rico said one took bullets in the leg and abdomen and the other suffered a gunshot wound in the abdomen.

According to one member of law enforcement, military official Roberto Ezequial Rosas was one of the injured. The law enforcement official said Rosas was shot in the leg outside the club.

According to William Ostick, a U.S. State Department spokesman, “two members of the U.S. Embassy in Caracas were injured during an incident early this morning."

"Medical staff inform us that their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening," he said. "Embassy security and health unit personnel are at the hospital and have been in touch with the two individuals and their families."

According to Patrick Ventrell who is also a spokesman for the State Department, the shooting occurred in “some sort of social spot or somewhere outside of the embassy grounds."

"I am not sure if it was a restaurant, or a nightclub, or what the actual establishment was, but that is why we are in touch with embassy personnel," he added.

A reporter from AP went to the scene and did not see apparent signs of a shooting. However, plain-clothes officers were investigating the scene.
