Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed have taken their new romance to next level by purchasing a brown horse together, referring to it as their "baby boy," ET Online reported.

The "Vampire Diaries" star, 35, announced on Instagram on August 5 that he and the 26-year-old "Twilight" actress, are now co-owners of the horse, named Eagle. In his post, he thanked his new beau for taking a photo of him embracing Eagle.

"Proud new dad...what amazing creatures they are," Somerhalder wrote on the social media site. "Wow. His name is Eagle. Thank you @iamnikkireed for snapping this special moment, with our big baby boy."

Somerhalder fans seem to be supportive of the couple's new pet. As of Wednesday, the photo received over 443,000 likes and almost 10,000 comments on the social network site.

The pair are big animal lovers and animal rights activists. Reed reached out to her fans in July and asked them to adopt dogs, a message which was then passed along by Somerhalder to his many fans and social media followers, US Magazine reported.

Coincidentally, Reed is starring in an upcoming movie called The Sunday Horse. The film is based on a true story of an equestrian named Debi Walden, who survives a nearly fatal accident and goes on to win the national jumping championship.

But this isn't Somerhalder's first time owning a pet with his girlfriend. Back in 2013, Somerhalder and his now ex-girlfriend Nina Dobrev rushed their cat Moke to the emergency room. Luckily, Moke, who Somerhalder found on the set of Lost, made a full recovery.

Despite the couple being broken up, Dobrev and Somerhalder teamed up in October 2013 to help the actor's dog, Nietzche, deliver her puppies. Dobrev posted photos on WhoSay of the proud, smiling new dog mom and her newborn puppies. Somerhalder also bragged about the event on social media, according to E Online.
