A couple who had been married for 62 years died within four hours of each other in a real-life story of true love.

"All Don wanted was to be with his beautiful wife. He adored my grandmother, loved her to the end of the Earth," Melissa Sloan of Bakersfield told KERO News.

Two weeks ago Don Simpson was taken to the hospital for a broken hip, ABC News reported. After his health started to deteriorate his family took him home to be with his wife, who had been fighting cancer for years. The couple was kept in side-by-side beds during the last days of their lives.

The inseparable couple spent their last hours holding hands and smiling at each other as they had for decades. Maxine Simpson passed away peacefully with her family at her side, and her beloved husband followed only four hours later.

"I knew in my heart this is what's supposed to happen. Grandma and Grandpa are supposed to be together and Grandma and Grandpa are going to die together," Sloan said.

Don and Maxine met in a bowling alley in Bakersfield Calif. and were married only a few years later, KERO News reported. Don was the founder of Bakersfield Racket Club, and the couple were also involved with the "Rotary, YMCA and the Boy's and Girl's Club." The couple traveled the world together.

Sloan heard Maxine taking her last breaths on the monitor. She said that when she went into the room to check, Maxine had already passed.

"I walked them out with her body, walked back in to check on grandpa and he quit breathing as soon as her body left the room. He left with her, and they passed four hours apart from each other," Sloan said.

"It's just amazing. It really is amazing. It's a true love story," she said.
