A 9-year-old girl who was severely injured by a plane that crash landed on a Florida beach over the weekend has died, authorities said.

Oceana Irizarry was walking with her father along the shore on Caspersen Beach in Venice on Sunday when they were struck by a small airplane that crash landed inches from the water.

The father, 36-year-old Ommy Irizarry, died at the scene. His daughter was airlifted to a children's hospital in St. Petersburg. She died Tuesday from her injuries, the Associated Press reported.

Officials said the father and daughter were struck by either the actual airplane or debris from the crash.

Army Sergeant 1st Class Ommy Irizarry, of Fort Stewart, Georgia, was in Florida celebrating his ninth wedding anniversary with his wife Rebecca at the time of the incident, which is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Before the crash, the pilot of the 1972 Piper Cherokee called the nearby Venice airport a little after 2:30 p.m. saying the plane was in distress and he needed to make an emergency landing.

"He did land at the edge of the water on the beach," Wendy Rose, a spokeswoman for the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, told the AP.

According to the sheriff's office, the plane struck the father and daughter before continuing another 50 yards along the shore, Reuters reported.

The pilot, 57-year-old Karl Kokomoor, and his passenger, 60-year-old David Theen, were not injured in the crash.

Ommy Irizarry's two other children, his mother and a family friend were also on the beach, Reuters reported. They were not harmed.

The hospital where Oceana was taken released a statement on behalf of the family after her passing.

"Our precious Oceana has joined her daddy in heaven," the family said according to Reuters. "There are no words to describe the suffering we are experiencing. Their loss is devastating to our family and to everyone who knew them."
