New Yorks Jets rookie Geno Smith and his recruitment by Roc Nation Sports is under investigation.  The NFL Players Association is planning to send a letter of inquiry to Jay-Z's agency, NFL.com reports.

The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) wants to learn more about Jay-Z's involvement in recruiting Smith.  The union is investigating whether Smith's courting by Jay-Z violated the newly instituted "runner rule."  The rule prohibits agents from having colleagues or friends who aren't certified by the NFLPA present during recruitment meetings.

While Kim Miale is Smith's agent, recent news suggests Jay-Z had an influence in getting Smith to sign with Roc Nation.

CBS reported that John Thornton, an adviser for Smith, said, "I was in those meetings, and Jay-Z connected with him on many levels."  Thornton later claimed he was misquoted.

Smith, who fell to the second round of this year's draft, recently fired his former agent Jeff Nalley of Select Sports Group.  After exploring his options, the former West Virginia quarterback signed with Jay-Z's Roc Nation.

Smith is the third major client Roc Nation signed.  The newly formed talent agency signed New York Yankees player Robinson Cano in April, and they handle New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz's marketing.

The New York Jets are expected to have Smith compete with Mark Sanchez during training camp, where he will have the chance to supplant Sanchez for the starting position.  Sanchez, who is the incumbent starter, could be released on June 1 to save the Jets from a $17 million salary cap hit, according to the New York Post.
