Motorola is giving its customers a new tool for unlocking their smartphones: tattoos.

The feature, called "digital tattoo," was launched by Moto X Tuesday, but the concept was first introduced last year at the D: All Things Digital conference, according to CNET.

The telecommunications company said it takes 2.3 seconds on average for people to unlock their mobile devices, and that they do it almost 39 times a day. Some people decide to not lock their device because the process could take too long. The company is looking to make the tattoo a more convenient tool for unlocking phones.

The wearable technology was produced through Motorola's partnership with VivaLnk, and comes in the form of a tribal-looking sticker laced with NFC technology, Yahoo! News reported. After attaching the tattoo to the skin, the user can unlock his/her phone by tapping the device against the tattoo. The tattoo is not permanent, and it can be placed on any part of the body, such as the wrist, neck, upper arm, lower back, or face.

The digital tattoo comes in the form of a thin sticker that is the size of a nickel, CNET reported. It can be worn for five days, and users will be able to wear it while taking a shower, swimming, or working out. Those interested in using the tattoo to unlock their phones can buy it through VivaLnk, and a pack of 10 is available for $10.

The tattoo isn't the only device Motorola has released for unlocking smartphones. The company previously came out with Skip, a clip that customers can wear and tap only once to unlock their phones.
