A 1938 Action Comics #1 comic book featuring the debut of Superman, found in the wall of an abandoned house, is set to go "under the hammer" online on the website, ComicConnect.com.
A rare copy of Action Comics #1 that features the debut of Superman is up for auction on the website, ComicConnect.com and likely to fetch up to $150,000. Approximately 100 copies of these Action Comics exist currently. The Action Comics #1 was found in the insulation of a house in Minnesota, where it was stuck for 75 years. According to dealer Vincent Zurzolo, this edition of Superman comic is a "virgin copy."
"We call this one 'the grail in the wall'," he said. "It has been in that house for 75 years."
Currently, the bid for this comic stands at $137,000, which is likely to exceed its estimated value of $150,000, said Zurzolo. The person who found the comic, David Gonzales, a home remodeler, said that the back cover of the comic book was torn in an argument with his in-laws. The damage has reduced the value of the comic by $75,000.
Such rare comics come with their own stories of discovery, which add value to it, somewhat. "Of course people really love the collectible itself, but often it's the story behind it that gets them even more," Zurzolo said
Another copy of Action Comics #1 sold for a record of $2.1 million, which belonged to actor Nicolas Cage. It is recorded as the most expensive Action Comics #1. It was graded 9 out of 10 by the Certified Guaranty Company, the leading grader of the quality of collectible comics.
