Mel Gibson has some words of wisdom for troubled star Shia LaBeouf.

While talking to IndieWire about the Lifetime Achievement Award he received from the 2014 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, the conversation quickly shifted to LaBeouf's erratic behavior over the past couple of months.

"When I see somebody like Shia LaBeouf with the bag on his head and stuff, my heart goes out to the poor guy," Gibson said. "I think he's suffering in some way, or why would he do that? It's easy to point the finger at him and say that he's this, that, or the other, and it's easy to judge."

Gibson added: "But I'm sure he's going through some kind of personal, very painful, cathartic thing that he has to exorcise and get out there. He'll probably play it out and come back...He'll be alright."

In June, the former "Transformers" star was arrested while attending a performance of the Broadway show "Cabaret" in New York City. Based on a police report, the 28-year-old actor was "engaging in disruptive behavior" during the show.

He pleaded not guilty to two counts of disorderly conduct and one count of criminal trespassing. A week before his arrest, LaBeouf was spotted trying to start a fight with another male individual in front of a New York City strip club.

Gibson has also faced some controversy throughout his career. The Academy-Award winning actor is famously known for using anti-Semitic slurs during a 2006 DUI arrest.

In the nearly 20-minute interview with IndieWire, Gibson said being famous can make someone a target.

"You have to be really adept at tap dancing and dodging the bullets," he stated. "And sometimes you get hit. Sometimes mortally. It's pretty bad."
