Isis mobile wallet service is looking to rebrand itself to avoid being mistaken for the militant group ISIS.

Isis is a mobile wallet platform backed by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon in the United States. But the name has given rise to confusion as it gets mixed up with ISIS, an Islamic militant group that has come to prominence in Iraq and Syria. Public perception and search engine optimization, SEO, factors have forced the Isis mobile wallet service to come up with a new brand name to distance itself from the terrorist group.

Two organizations sharing the same name has never been a problem in the past. Brands like Domino sugar and Domino's Pizza, Burlington retailer and Burlington holding company, Dove soap and Dove chocolate, Apple records and Apple computers, are a few examples of organizations that share the same name with different operations. But Isis mobile wallet's brand name became synonymous with the ISIS militant group, not something that any company wants. So the company plans to pick a new name to avoid any mix-up.

"We wanted a name that brought to life our company and our values. Above all, we wanted a brand that captured the simplicity of our mobile wallet experience. We chose Isis," said Isis CEO Michael Abbott in a statement on the company's official websiteMonday. The brand was named after Egyptian goddess of nature and magic.

"[W]e have no interest in sharing a name with a group whose name has become synonymous with violence and our hearts go out to those who are suffering. As a company, we have made the decision to rebrand."

Isis mobile platform offers a free wallet app for iOS and Android and allows consumers to pay via NFC chips built into mobile devices. Apple device users require a special case called "Isis Ready" NFC as they do not feature near-field-communication systems. The app supports only select credit cards on its platform, which includes the American Express, Amex Chase, Service and Wells Fargo. The company has failed to gain a strong foothold in the competitive market, where giants like Google offer digital wallet service.

Isis is still in the process of coming up with a new name for the company.
