Apple released Tuesday a new locking device designed for the Mac Pro that helps prevent robberies.

The lock, called the "Mac Pro Security Lock Adapter," is priced at $49 - that's cheaper than most current locking devices, since the device is being released without a cable, according to PC Magazine. Gadgets that feature a cable include Maclock's Security Bracket, which costs $70.

Apple said the device lets consumers keep their Mac Pros secure with a Kensington lock or a similar third-party lock, which is sold separately.

"The adapter attaches without tools and does not modify or damage the Mac. With a compatible lock connected, the Mac Pro Lock Adapter secures the housing to the enclosure, preventing access to internal components," the company explained.

The adapter attaches to the pedestal and aluminum case of the Mac Pro, giving it access to the Mac's ports and the power cord while it keeps the case from being opened, Apple Insider reported. Apple stated its in-house design for the Mac Pro is temporary, and it can be removed with harming the device's case.

The company has been looking for different ways to keep the Mac Pro secure since it first debuted in retail stores. Apple looked to provide security with an Ethernet-based alarm system which, instead of securing the Mac Pro in place, sets off an alarm when it is removed from its spot, Mac Rumors reported.

The Mac Pro Security Lock Adapter can be purchased now in the Apple Online Store. While the adapter has not been made available in retail stores yet, it is expected to be sold in retail stores in the near future.
