A 16-year-old New Jersey student was charged Friday for hacking into a school computer to change the grades and attendance records of multiple classmates, the Associated Press reported.

The Orange High School sophomore, whose name was not released because of his age, was charged with multiple counts of computer theft for unlawfully accessing and altering data and hindering apprehension, officials from the Essex County Prosecutor's office and the Orange Police Department said Monday.

When it was discovered that an unauthorized user had gained access to the school's computer system, school officials immediately notified the Essex County Prosecutor's office Cyber Crimes Unit, who then began a criminal investigation.

It was found that a sophomore had used a staff member's password without authorization to hack into the system and change grades and attendance records of multiple students, prosecutors said. He was arrested and charged on Friday, only being released on a recognizance bond.

Several students were also disciplined administratively by the local district in connection with the incident last week, with most facing 10-day suspensions along with being banned from participating in extracurricular activities next school year.

About 35 students who had their records altered were suspended, though many said they had no knowledge of the hack and claimed that whoever hacked the system changed a lot of grades so it would not be tracked back to him, New Jersey 12 reported.

Sophomore Tyler Taylor who is still serving a 10-day suspension said the arrest does nothing to help his situation. "It doesn't really change anything. I'm still suspended and I still don't have a reason why," he said. "I need some answers to these questions that the board of education are still not answering,"

At least 100 other students were questioned about the incident, CBS News reported.

The case is expected to be handled in Family Court, with police saying the investigation remains open as there is still potential for more suspects to be charged.
