Ed Boon, chief of NetherRealm Studios and co-creator of the Mortal Kombat video game series, announced that Mortal Kombat X will be released in 2015.

Boon made the announcement on Twitter, first unveiling the title of the tenth installment of the series, and then the announcement trailer, according to PC Magazine.

"Fueled by next-gen technology, Mortal Kombat X combines unparalleled, cinematic presentation with dynamic gameplay to create an unprecedented Kombat experience," the YouTube description said.

Publisher Warner Bros. said the game will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Eurogamer.net reported. Warner added that Mortal Kombat X will provide a "fully-connected experience" for gamers, and that it includes a "persistent online contest where every fight matters in a global battle for supremacy."

The first title in the series debuted in 1992 and was released by Midway Games, PC Magazine reported. The ninth installment was released in 2011.

The series is currently being handled by NetherRealm Studios, with the upcoming game teasing new abilities as well as old ones that fans love. The two-minute trailer shows rivals Sub-Zero and Scorpion attacking each other in a dark forest with icicles and fireballs. The trailer also shows the characters interacting with their surroundings, swinging from trees and using branches as weapons.

Players will be able to choose from different variations of each character, which will have an effect on the character's fighting style and strategy, Eurogamers.net reported. The game includes an original story that focuses on the main characters in the series, such as Scorpion and Sub-Zero, along with new characters.

"Mortal Kombat has always been about over-the-top, visceral fighting, and with Mortal Kombat X we wanted to utilize the power of next-gen consoles to give players our most intense game yet," Boon said. "The team has worked hard to make sure Mortal Kombat X delivers everything fans expect along with new characters, new game modes and an all-new graphics engine."
