The wife of former Vice President Dick Cheney believes the Clinton family is behind the recent Monica Lewinsky interview published in Vanity Fair, USA TODAY reported.

"I really wonder if this isn't an effort on the Clintons' part to get that story out of the way," Cheney said during an interview with Fox News on Tuesday. "Would Vanity Fair publish anything about Monica Lewinsky that Hillary Clinton didn't want in Vanity Fair?"

Cheney argued her question was valid as Hillary Clinton ponders a possible run for president in 2016, claiming the feature was a "strategy or tactic" about "getting it out of the way so we can say one more time to say, 'it is old news.'"

She also brought up the time were U.S. Sen. Rand Paul -- a potential 2016 GOP nominee -- brought up the Lewinsky scandal on "Meet the Press" in January, criticizing former President Bill Clinton's "predatory behavior."

In a new release promoting the story, Lewinsky claims it was entirely her idea to come forward about the scandal and did not speak with the Clintons.

The former White House intern said she has remained so silent "that the buzz in some circles has been that the Clintons must have paid me off; why else would I have refrained from speaking out? I can assure you that nothing could be further from the truth."

In the official interview, she told Vanity Fair that the "inappropriate relationship" she had with Clinton was entirely "consensual."

"Sure, my boss took advantage of me, but I will always remain firm on this point: it was a consensual relationship. Any 'abuse' came in the aftermath, when I was made a scapegoat in order to protect his powerful position.... The Clinton administration, the special prosecutor's minions, the political operatives on both sides of the aisle, and the media were able to brand me. And that brand stuck, in part because it was imbued with power," Lewinsky said.
