"Spring Breakers 2" has been confirmed and will be produced by Wild Bunch, a French-based company. According to Screen Daily, Wild Bunch plans to premiere the movie at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival Market later this month.

The sequel will be called "Spring Breakers: The Second Coming" and will follow a group of college students on spring break that come head-to-head with an extreme Christian sect that is determined to convert them.

"It's not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original," Vincent Maraval, Wild Bunch co-chief said, according to the Daily Mail.

The original 2012 film starred Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens and Rachel Korine. James Franco also starred in the film as Alien. The movie followed the girls on their spring break and subsequent descent into drug use, crime and violence.

According to the Daily Mail, the original earned $31 million worldwide and received positive reviews from critics. It's not clear if Gomez, Hudgens or any of the original cast members will reprise their roles but Maraval said the new film will feature a mix of both old and new cast members.

In September, Franco told MTV that he had been approached to do another "Spring Breakers" movie even though his character was killed.

"I mean, Harmony [Korine] and I are certainly going to do something else together," Franco previously told MTV. "I don't think Harmony really wants to do ‘Spring Breakers 2.' He's not the one who's been talking about it. Although, when we were making the movie, there was talk of a prequel. My character and Gucci Mane's character were supposed to have been former friends, so we at one time talked about ‘What was that like? Let's make that movie!' So there' that. There's a prequel version, or there's the version of Alien's friend or something. I don't know."
