A California homeowner fatally shot two intruders during a reported burglary on Sunday, FoxNews.com reported.

Two males were found dead from gunshot wounds when authorities arrived, according to a police press release. They appeared to be in their late teens or early 20s, but neither were immediately identified.

An adult in the Sacramento home approached the two men in self-defense around midnight, according to police. Both occupants of the home are reportedly cooperating with investigators.

Michele Giganate of the Sacramento Police told CBS News the occupants are an eldery man and woman, though she did not disclose who shot the intruders.

"When it comes to use of force, or burglars, or any type of fear for your safety, fear for someone else's safety ... you have the right to defend yourself," Gigante said.

Neighbors told News10.net that the men had burglarized the same home before.

Officials said no charges will be filed against the shooter.

The investigation is ongoing and Sacramento police is asking anyone with information on the incident to call the dispatch center at (916) 264-5471 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP (4357). Callers can also text a tip to 274637 (CRIMES). Individuals may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000.
