An elementary school in Florida has stopped serving Mountain Dew to students before taking standardized tests, FoxNews.com reported.

A woman reportedly contacted local media outlets after learning that students were being given three tablespoons of the sugary drink and trail mix before taking the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.

Michelle Irwin, a spokeswoman for Brevard County schools, said administrators have stopped and will only serve water and trail mix to students at Creel Elementary School from now on.

According to Irwin, Principal Kathryn Eward began handing out the special snack around 10 years ago after reading a study showing a positive effect on students before taking exams.

"She felt that it was a professional practice and implemented it," Irwin said. "Since then, there's been new information (about what's best for students)."

Eward told Florida Today that the soda, served in small paper cups, and trail mix were part of an effort to get the students excited about taking the test -- which also included encouraging kids to get rest, wear comfortable clothes, and have a healthy breakfast.

Students are also enticed with a lighter homework load and get special pencils for the test, Florida Today reported.

Though the concern prompted the Mountain Dew to be cut from the effort, Eward still doesn't believe the amount of soda given was enough to have a negative impact.

"We've done it for years. The kids look forward to the treats," she said. However, the principal appreciates that parents are involved in what their children are consuming.

"It's wonderful for people to be mindful of their kids, and what they're eating and drinking and doing," she added.
