Cuba Gooding Jr. and his wife, Sara Kapfer, are separating after 20 years together.

Us Weekly reported that Kapfer filed for legal separation in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split. According to court docs, the couple married on March 13, 1994 but legally separated on April 16, 2014.

The 46-year-old "Jerry Maguire" actor and his wife were high school sweethearts and have three children together: Spencer, 19, Mason, 17, and Piper, 8. Kapfer, a school teacher, asked the court for joint legal and physical custody of Mason and Piper, who are both minors. She's also reportedly asking for spousal support.

Last year, during an interview with ABC's "The View," Gooding said he considered himself "lucky" to have had a long-lasting marriage in the entertainment industry.

"Are you the only one who's still with someone by this time?" guest host Suze Orman asked.

"I'm lucky," the Academy Award-winner said. "Like I always say, it's been five women I've been with. I was with the high school girl, then the college girl, then the newlywed, and then the mother, and now she's dealing with the kids leaving the house."

Gooding Jr. added: "She has been changing into this other woman that I have to introduce myself to every few years. And thank God I've fallen in love with each one. It's true. I'm lucky that way... Oh, I want to kill her sometimes and she puts up with me!"

Gooding Jr. will next appear in the upcoming films "Carry Me Home" and "Gridlocked".
