Director Chris Columbus and actor Robin Williams have officially signed on for a "Mrs. Doubtfire" sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film reportedly grossed $219 million domestically and $222 million internationally. Williams also took home a Golden Globe for best actor in a musical/comedy for his role as struggling actor turned nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire.

"A sequel has been in the works since 2001 when Bonnie Hunt was tapped to write a script, but despite many drafts and other scribes hired, the project slowly died and has been inactive for years, mainly due to Columbus and Williams not sparking to any new take," THR reports. "The project became active again early this year with Berenbaum's involvement and while it's too soon to predict if all the elements will ultimately come together, Williams and Columbus are attached and hopeful about the outcome."

"Elf" writer David Berenbaum has been tapped to write the sequel's script. The film does not have an official release date and it is unclear which actors will return for the sequel. However, actress Mara Wilson, who played Natalie Hillard in the film, confirmed on her official Twitter account she is not interested in being a part of the sequel.

"For the record, no, I do not have anything to do with the Mrs. Doubtfire sequel, nor will I," Wilson wrote. "Sequels generally suck unless they were planned as part of a trilogy or series. I think Doubtfire ended where it needed to end. There are many, many reasons I don't want to be in Mrs. Doubtfire 2. But they haven't even asked me (yet), so no need to worry."

The original "Mrs. Doubtfire" starred Robin Williams, Mara Wilson, Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan, Lisa Jakub, Matthew Lawrence and Harvey Fierstein.
