A spokeswoman from the Pentagon says the U.S. Defense Department is scheduled to give Apple Inc. mobile devices clearance to operate on its network next week, according to Bloomberg.com.

According to Alana Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Pentagon’s Defense Information Systems, the approval would allow iOS 6—Apple’s latest mobile operating system—to be used by military networks.

This would put Apple right into the competition that already exists between Blackberry and Samsung. Blackberry is the smartphone leader for the Pentagon and Samsung recently got approval in early May.

Johnson said Apple products would not be used by the entire military until the Pentagon constructs a management system to make sure the devices are secure.
