Fans of "How I Met Your Mother" will finally get the happily-ever-after ending they always wanted. The CBS comedy aired its last episode Monday to mostly negative reviews. The series finale showed Ted finally reveal why he was telling his children the story of how he met their mother. It also revealed the fate of the woman who eventually became Mrs. Mosby.

On the finale, fans learned that Ted was telling his story because the Mother had died from an undisclosed illness. At the end of the story, Ted's children gave their blessing for him to pursue a relationship with Robin, the woman he's loved the entire time.

Fans were upset that the series spent nine seasons building up the Mother only to kill her off in the end. Many fans were hoping the two would have a happy ending together. Even though the cast and crew have defended the ending, the show does have plans to release an alternate ending for the "HIMY" complete series DVD set and Season 9 DVD set, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Executive Carter Bays made the announcement on Twitter.

"We only shot one script, but through edit-room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series," he wrote on Twitter. "We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too. We're going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to 'How I Met Your Mother.'"

"If you didn't like the finale, I guess that happens. We tried something and it didn't connect with you. I hope we're still friends," he added.

Bays didn't reveal how much the alternate ending would differ from the TV version but he did say that it would be "very different." So does that mean the Mother could live in the alternate ending and she and Ted go on about their lives as a happy couple? If that happens, then producers would have to do something about Robin and how her story ends. During the finale she did admit that she should have ended up with Ted.

The "HIMYM" complete series DVD set comes out this fall.
