Spotify is targeting college students to boost its premium service user base by offering a 50 percent discount on its monthly subscription of $10 in the U.S.

Spotify, the popular music streaming service, is trying to attract the young crowd with its attractive subscription deal for the budget-conscious students in the U.S. The subscription music company introduced a new offer Tuesday that drops the price of its premium service to $4.99 a month from its original price of $10 a month. The offer is limited to U.S. students in four-year, two-year or junior high college.

The premium Spotify subscription offers unlimited access to 20 million songs without any advertisements. According to the company, the premium packs a better sound quality and allows users to listen to songs offline. The generous discount on its premium subscription fees shows Spotify's dedication to a massive growth in the U.S. The company added more than a million paying American subscribers from the time it was launched in 2011. The new offer by Spotify targets a bigger crowd for its premium user base from 22 million college students.

Introduction of the new student-only offer is a good timing for Spotify, as Pandora, the biggest online radio service, announced a hike in its subscription rate for new customers starting May. Despite the hike, Pandora offers its services for an affordable $5 a month, but for all users. In this case, U.S. college students have a choice of Pandora, which currently offers the subscription for $3.99, or Spotify.

Behind the scenes, Spotify will still have to pay music owners a minimum fee for using their songs. But if the new offer works well and new subscribers start signing up in large numbers, Spotify will be able to cover those extra costs with ease.

Students signing up for the new Spotify subscription will have to verify their details like educational institute, date of birth or other such documents. The music streaming service will use SheerID verification service for validation of students' enrollment.

Under the new offer, students will receive a 50 percent discount on monthly Spotify subscription for up to 12 consecutive months. Terminating the service in the middle of the discount period and signing up again will continue the discount for the remaining months. Students can activate another Student Discount Offer to continue paying the reduced price at the end of 12-month period.
