Victor Wembanyama Named ‘NBA 2K27' Cover Athlete Ahead of Spurs, Knicks Finals

Wemby is definitely the face of the NBA right now.

We're nearing the end of the "NBA 2K26," as the game heads to the NBA Grand Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks. Before the most anticipated showdown between these top teams, the league officially announced Victor Wembanyama as the cover athlete for "NBA 2K27."

The selection marks another significant milestone in the young superstar's rapidly ascending career as he continues to establish himself among the NBA's elite players.

International Stars Continue Dominating NBA 2K Covers

Since entering the league, Wembanyama has exceeded the expectations for modern big men with his rare combination of scoring, rebounding, shot-blocking, and playmaking abilities.

The Frenchman's impact on the court and growing international popularity made him a natural choice to represent the latest installment of the basketball simulation franchise.

Wembanyama's appearance on the "NBA 2K27" cover continues a recent trend of international players becoming the face of the series. In recent years, NBA 2K has highlighted some of basketball's biggest global stars.

The previous edition featured Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, while "NBA 2K22" showcased Luka Dončić. Wembanyama now joins that distinguished group.

To this day, Nikola Jokic has not yet been featured as an NBA 2K cover athlete despite achieving multiple accolades throughout the past years.

Playoff Success Strengthened His Case

According to Basket News, the cover announcement follows an impressive postseason run that elevated Wembanyama's profile even further. During his first playoff appearance, the 7-foot-4 center averaged 23.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game while shooting 51 percent from the field.

Wemby's dominance was particularly evident during the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Across the seven-game series, Wembanyama averaged 27.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2.7 blocks per game, delivering elite performances on both ends of the floor.

Those efforts earned him unanimous Western Conference Finals MVP honors and solidified his reputation as one of basketball's brightest young stars.

Leading the Spurs Back to the NBA Finals

One of the defining moments of Wembanyama's postseason came in Game 7 of the conference finals. Facing immense pressure, he delivered a composed performance with 22 points and seven rebounds, helping the San Antonio Spurs secure a return to the NBA Finals.

Wemby's leadership and production played a pivotal role in the franchise's resurgence and showcased his ability to thrive on basketball's biggest stage. He's undeniably talented and a generational talent that you won't usually see from other big men. He's quick, has great defense, can shoot threes, and even dribble like a point guard on the court despite his giant stature.

The NBA Finals Game 1 between the Spurs and Knicks will take place at 8:30 PM in Frost Bank Center in San Antonio.
