Twitter is pulling the plug on its #music app by removing it from the App Store and says the app will stop working on devices April 18.

As Twitter celebrates its eight birthday, the social network is preparing to pull the plug on one of its services, the infamous #music app. Released on iOS platform and on the web in April last year, #music will cease to work on all devices on completing its first year anniversary on April 18. Twitter already removed the app from App Store, so new users cannot download the #music for iPhones.

The #music app announced last April, helps users discover new artists and bands by using tweets and follows on the micro-blogging site. The app received an impressive initial response, so much that it once stood at the number 6 spot in the App Store's Top Free Apps list. But the dominance did not last for long as app downloads and user-engagement drastically dropped.

Twitter announced the news of #music's demise through a tweet from the Twitter Music's official account.

As confirmed by the social media giant, the app no longer appears in the App Store, but for those who have already downloaded the app, they can continue using it until April 18. The move does not come as a big surprise as the company was reportedly planning to kill off the #music app, according to an earlier report. The sudden downtrend in the service's popularity played a vital role in the company's decision to stop #music. The service was suppressed by other big players such as Pandora, Apple iTunes Radio among others. In another tweet, Twitter said the decision to kill off its #music app does not stop the company from experimenting with new ways to bring "great content based on the music activity we see every day on Twitter." The micro-blogging site is sure to be holding on to the music business.
