President Barack Obama will deliver a commencement speech at the University of California, Irvine's Orange County campus for the 2014 graduating class.

A letter-writing campaign launched by UCI students and alumni proved successful - the POTUS will make an appearance at the Angels Stadium in neighboring city Anaheim on June 14, the Fresno Bee reported on Thursday.

This commencement ceremony is particularly special, for it marks the university's 50-year anniversary.

"We are thrilled that the president has accepted our invitation to deliver the keynote address at our commencement exercises this June," Chancellor Michael V. Drake wrote in a statement released Thursday. "We are proud of the progress we have made during our first half-century, and are looking forward to even greater achievements in the years to come."

Nearly 10,000 students, members of staff and alumni started inviting President Obama to the sunny campus April of last year, according to the Fresno Bee. The White House received thousands of postcards and letters asking that the President give a speech for the university's commencement.

At least 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students will hear the POTUS speak at the commencement, which usually takes place on campus, but will be hosted at the Anaheim Angels field to commemorate UCI's opening in June 1964.

This isn't the first time a member of the Obama administration has visited a UC - five years ago, First Lady Michelle Obama spoke at the University of California, Merced's commencement, after students successfully lobbied for the FLOTUS to attend the event.
