Nicole Beausoleil, victim Madisyn Baldwin’s mother, gave the first impact statement at the sentencing hearing.

As the sentencing got underway Tuesday of the parents of a Michigan school shooter who killed four classmates in 2021 for their role in in the incident the judge heard emotional statements from families of Ethan Crumbley's victims.

Nicole Beausoleil, victim Madisyn Baldwin's mother, gave the first impact statement at the hearing ahead of Jennifer and James Crumbley learning their fate.

"Madisyn was a kind soul," she said as she tried to keep herself from crying. "As her mom, I didn't protect her."

Beausoleil laid out the different things that were happening between the two families at the time of the shooting.

"While your son was hearing voices and asking for help, I was helping Madisyn pick out her senior classes," she told the Crumbleys.

"While you were purchasing a gun and leaving it unlocked, I was helping her finish her college essays."

The boy's parents went into hiding after the killing.

"While you checked into your first hotel, I was telling Madisyn's 11-year-old sister she was gone," Beausoleil said. "When you cared more about yourself and getting alcohol and supplies, I was identifying my daughter at a medical office."

"While you were hiding, I was planning her funeral," she continued. "And while you were running away from your son and your responsibilities, I was forced to do the worst possible thing a parent could do. I was forced to say goodbye to my Madisyn."

In conclusion she told the Crumbleys, "Not only did your son kill my daughter, you did too."

She asked for the judge to give them the maximum sentence.

The judge did just that and  sentenced each to 10-15 years in prison
