Philadelphia police are investigating the death of a "severely decomposed" child found stuffed inside a duffle bag and tossed in a parking lot.

Sanitation workers found the remains-filled bag Monday morning at a work site, police said, according to CBS News, WTXF-TV, and WPVI-TV.

Investigators estimate the victim to be between the ages of 2 and 4. It's unclear how long the child had been in the duffle or if there were any obvious signs of trauma because the corpse was "severely decomposed," said police, the outlets reported.

Authorities are working to determine the victim's identity and investigating whether their death may be connected to other missing persons cases in the area.

The Philadelphia Police Department did not immediately respond to Headline and Global News' request for comment.
