Three people were killed, and an infant is in critical condition after a white Mercedes SUV slammed into a bus shelter in San Francisco over the weekend.

Police said that two of the victims, including a child, died at the scene on Saturday afternoon in the city's West Portal neighborhood. Three other people, including the driver of the car involved in the incident, were injured and taken to hospitals for treatment.

Meanwhile, a third fatality was recorded after a woman later died at a hospital.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, an infant has been taken to hospital for life-threatening injuries.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency said on Saturday that it and the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) would investigate the cause of the crash.

"We do not believe that traffic engineering was a factor in this case," an SFPD spokesperson told SFGATE via email.

Meanwhile, San Francisco Mayor London Breed said on X, formerly Twitter, that she had visited the scene of the collision on Saturday and called the incident "heartbreaking."

In response, residents left flowers at a makeshift memorial where the crash occurred, the Chronicle reported. The advocacy group Walk San Francisco also planned to do a vigil on Monday evening (Mar. 18) at the site.
