An investigation is underway at a Jacksonville, Florida residence after a homeowner spotted human toes sticking out of the ground in his backyard.

"We were working inside the house and then the owner came to us and said, 'Hey, there is something here. We have to call 911. I said 'OK.' I was shook," an unidentified woman, who was helping the homeowner with housework, told WJXT-TV.

"They were all black and stuff," she explained. "But I guess that was from decomposing." 

The homeowner was reportedly at the property with workers, completing renovations, according to the station.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and medical examiner are investigating the case.

The identity of the victim and manner of death has not yet been released.
