A rubber boat carrying migrants sank off Turkey's Aegean coast on Friday, killing at least 20 people, including four children, according to reports.

It's unclear how many people were on the boat when it sank off the cost of the Canakkale province in northwest Turkey, the Associated Press reported.

Two migrants were rescued by the Turkish coast guard and two others managed to swim to shore, Gov. Ilhami Aktas said, the wire service reported.

The governor told Turkish media outlets that at least four infants and children were among the dead.

The nationalities of the migrants were unknown.

Search and rescue operations that include 10 coast guard boats and two helicopters continue off the coast. A number of ambulances were at a nearby port.

Migrants from the Middle East and Africa often depart Turkey for Greece as they journey to European countries, the Associated Press said.

Some also leave Turkey for Italy.

The AP reported that the Turkish coast guard caught 93 migrants trying to leave Turkey on boats this week.
