McDonald's branches in multiple countries have been hit by a technical outage that left them unable to process orders via its self-ordering kiosk systems.

"We are aware of a technology outage currently impacting our restaurants nationwide and are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible," a spokesperson for McDonald's Australia told Business Insider on Friday (Mar. 15). "We apologize for the inconvenience and thank customers for their patience."

A similar statement was also issued in New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China, and urged customers to instead order directly at the store counter.

As of the end of 2023, McDonald's has over 41,000 restaurants globally. Of those, 1,033 are in Australia, 170 in New Zealand, 5,903 locations in China, 2,982 in Japan, 254 in Hong Kong, and 409 in Taiwan.

Other countries that were affected by the glitch include Canada, the Netherlands, South Korea, and Germany, Newsweek reported.

It is not immediately clear how many stores were affected by the outage.
