Sudan army soldiers say they have recaptured the headquarters of the state radio and TV broadcaster from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This is a symbolic breakthrough in the 11-month civil war, according to the BBC.

The RSF has used the compound in Omdurman, just across the Nile from the capital, Khartoum since the start of hostilities.

The fighting erupted last April between the country's military, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, and the RSF, commanded by Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.

The conflict has displaced more than 10 million people either to safer areas within Sudan or to neighboring countries.

Conditions have deteriorated into a dire humanitarian situation that risks creating the world's largest hunger crisis, a top U.N. official warned.

In January, International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan said there are grounds to believe both sides have committed genocide and war crimes

The International Rescue Committee, an organization that is dedicated to "help people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster" recently listed Sudan at the top of its Emergency Watchlist for 2024.
