Two National Guard troops who died and another who was injured Friday in a helicopter crash near the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas have been identified.

The New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association announced the death of Chief Warrant Officer John M. Grassia III, 30, in a social media post.

"Trooper Grassia, who was dedicated to serving and protecting not only the citizens of New York State but also the citizens of the entire United States, will be remembered for his ultimate sacrifice," the group said.

Grassia joined the New York State Police in April 2022 and was most recently assigned to Troop G. 

Funeral arrangements were still pending as of the group's post.

 The second victim was identified as Chief Warrant Officer Casey Frankoski, according to the mayor of Rensselaer, New York.

Mayor Michael Stammel called her a "remarkable New York National Guard helicopter pilot" in a Facebook post.

"A proud native of Rensselaer and distinguished graduate of Columbia High School, Casey was not only an excellent student but also excelled in sports and community service before joining the New York National Guard," he wrote.

Her father is retired Rensselaer Police Chief James Frankoski. 

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Frankoski family as we collectively mourn the loss of a beloved city native and dedicated patriot," Stammel wrote. "Please keep all of the victims and families in your prayers."

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office in New York reported that a third New York National Guardsman was injured in the crash. He was identified as Rensselaer Hight School graduate Jacob Pratt.

The Lakota UH-72 helicopter crashed on Friday afternoon near Rio Grande City, according to Joint Task Force North out of Fort Bliss, Texas.

The Starr County Sheriff responded to the crash and said there were four occupants on the craft and indicated the third person who died was a member of the U.S. Border Patrol.

The Border Patrol Agent was identified on Sunday as Chris Luna.

"We mourn alongside Agent Luna's family, including his wife and two children, parents, and brother," the office of the commissioner said in a statement.

The Texas border enforcement effort known as "Operation Lone Star" utilizes the National Guard and other law enforcement units for border security.
