If you're going on your first date this Valentine's Day, who should pay the bill? Here's what relationship experts say.

Some men will want to shoulder all the bills to impress the ladies. But, others might be hesitant since it will look like they don't see their dates independently enough.

This could also be the case for women. If you are one of those who are having difficulties in choosing who will settle the bill on the first date, here's what experts say.

Valentine's Day 2024: Who Should Pay on First Date?

Knowing who should pay the bill on the first date is more complicated than you think. US News reported that there are many factors that need to be considered if only one person will shoulder the expenses.

Certified financial therapist Traci Williams said that one person settling the entire bill is becoming less and less common nowadays, as reported by US News.

"While some people continue to prefer the conventional approach, we're actually seeing more equity when it comes to who takes the bill," she explained.

"We discovered that a majority of Americans are alternating paying for dates," added Williams.

Now, here are factors that you need to consider when shouldering the entire bill or when splitting it:

When To Split the Bill

Williams said that if your first date doesn't cost much, it's okay to shoulder the entire bill. But, if the date is pretty expensive, such as attending a Taylor Swift concert, then couples need to have a clear conversation about it (it would be best to split the bill).

Salary Differences

Traci explained that allowing the higher-earning individual in a relationship is becoming more common. But, since the other person will likely ask to split the bill or shoulder it (especially if they're men), it would be best to go on a not-so-expensive date if the income disparity is too wide.

Culture

If you're going on a first date with people outside the U.S., it would be best to research their culture first. For example, Brazil's dating culture requires men to settle the entire bill on the first date. Meanwhile, Australians are okay to split the expenses.

Who Initiated First

Among the safest factors to rely on when it comes to settling the bill is who asked to go on a date first. This applies to both men and women.

Let's face it, men are considered the providers in all relationships. This is why guys paying the bill on first dates is still the best bet.

According to Gentleman's Journal, to ensure that your first date will be followed by other dates, men should shoulder the expenses no matter what.

But, if you're dating Ms. Independent, then you need to know when to quit and just allow her to split the bill. If you can still persuade her to allow you to shoulder it, the better.

Ladies and gentlemen, remember, there's nothing wrong with shouldering the entire bill or splitting the expenses. If you really want to secure the relationship you're about to start, think of it as an investment.
