The current state of relations between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin is "unprecedented," based on a recent report from the Chinese and Russian governments.

Putin has taken solace in his friendship with Xi, one of the few international leaders who have maintained a cordial relationship with the veteran Russian leader in the wake of his decision to invade Ukraine in 2022. On February 24, the dispute will have lasted two years with no sign of stopping, as per Newsweek.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin exchanged Lunar New Year greetings over the phone on Thursday, underscoring the importance of mutual cooperation and opposition to external interference, as reported by state media.

Beijing and Moscow's connection has been becoming stronger over the last several years, especially as Western countries, most particularly the United States and its allies, have been further separating themselves from Russia as a result of its activities in Ukraine. Before hostilities started, Xi and Putin signed major long-term energy deals and reaffirmed their commitment to a boundless relationship for the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022.

Despite facing economic sanctions, Russia and China have fortified their alliance through sustained high-level diplomatic engagement and robust trade. Bilateral trade between the two nations reached unprecedented levels in 2023, showcasing the resilience of their partnership.

Xi and Putin have cultivated their rapport over more than a decade, marked by frequent visits and dialogues. Xi, having visited Russia nine times, and Putin, having visited Beijing on eleven occasions, have continuously reinforced their strategic collaboration.

During their recent conversation, Xi commended the symbiotic relationship between the two countries and advocated for closer strategic ties. He emphasized the shared right of both nations to defend their sovereignty and reject external interference in their internal affairs, according to Washington Examiner.

Furthermore, Xi expressed China's willingness to enhance international multilateral cooperation with Russia, aligning with their shared vision for a more equitable global order.

Looking ahead, Xi is anticipated to engage in discussions with US President Joe Biden in the near future, as confirmed by US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. The dialogue aims to address pertinent international issues and foster constructive relations between the two superpowers.

Meanwhile, both Xi and Putin reaffirmed their commitment to establishing a multipolar world order, countering what they perceive as US-led containment efforts targeting their respective countries. They emphasized the importance of building a reliable financial infrastructure to facilitate transactions outside the influence of the US dollar.

The ongoing partnership between China and Russia, characterized by expanding trade and mutual support, has drawn scrutiny from the West. As Russia seeks economic stability amidst sanctions, China emerges as a critical ally, providing essential resources and economic opportunities.

Both leaders also discussed regional conflicts, including the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East, highlighting their alignment on key geopolitical issues.

Despite external criticisms, particularly from the United States regarding Taiwan, China remains steadfast in its commitment to the "one China" policy, as reiterated by President Putin, Al Jazeera reported.
